Summary on Supporting Non-Chinese Speaking Students to learn Chinese and Building an Inclusive Campus 2020/21

  1. Supporting non-Chinese speaking students to learn Chinese (Secondary 2)
Curriculum
The school adopts Accessing Chinese (Volume II and III Revised Edition, Chinese Education Research Center, Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong) as the main teaching and learning material.  It is supported by supplementary exercises (including reading articles and Chinese Language foundation exercises).

Multiple approach in lesson design
The school adopts various approaches in facilitating the student’s mastering of the Chinese Language, including illustrating the meaning of Chinese characters by using pictograph cards.  It is observed that the student’s motivation in learning has greatly improved when various means of receiving knowledge are made available to her.

Self-regulated learning
The student is required to use the Chinese Culture Reader (中華文化讀本) mobile app to deepen her understanding about Chinese historical figures on weekends on her own accord.

After-school support
An after-school non-Chinese speaking student assistant is hired to provide support to help the student consolidate her learning on all subjects on a daily basis.

  1. Cultivating an inclusive campus through various activities
Cross-subject Mid-autumn festival celebration 2020
The Chinese and English Department jointly organized a life-wide learning activity with the theme of celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival for both local and non-Chinese-speaking students.  They took part in lantern riddle-guessing games and discussed the poem “The Moon Goddess” (嫦娥) by Li Shangyin (李商隱).  Students were guided to pay particular attention to the various cultural elements contained in the poem which would enhance their understanding and appreciation of the Chinese culture.

Chinese Culture Week
In the second term, a Chinese Culture Week will be held to cultivate students’ appreciation of the traditional values.  Through an array of activities (including a poll for their most favorable historical figures, poetry recitations and other competitions), the school aims to enhance the bonding between local and non-Chinese speaking students by engaging them in meaningful activities as learning partners.
